Music awards nominations are popping up left, right and centre, only proving more and more that’s it’s a golden time for Aussie music.
Last night, The Age Music Victoria Awards released its nominations. It comes as no surprise that Courtney Barnett is a nominee for best Victorian album of 2018. Barnett, in addition to Camp Cope, Laura Jean, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Sampa the Great, are all in the running for the $10,000 prize.
Just before the Music Victoria awards came the results of the Australian Women in Music awards and the ARIA nominations. Each list of nominations highlighted the diversity and power coming from Australian acts, which is deeply overdue.
Camp Cope are unapologetic in their ways, creating desperately needed music in a deeply political time. Baker Boy, an Indigenous rapper from North East Arnhem Land, combines English and Yolngu Matha in his tracks. Sampa the Great interweaves themes of identity in her mixtapes. The vastness of ideas and expression is refreshing, it’s exciting and exactly what we need in 2018. It’s not the be all and end all of the issues that ripple throughout this industry, but it’s a start.
