Wet Lips have been frontrunners in changing the rules of the game by bringing feminist-driven punk-rock to the forefront for some time now, and their debut album is a shining reminder that they’re not letting anyone stand in their way.
The self-titled album is crammed full of searing tracks, each brimming with gutsy melodies and a whole lot of attitude. The lyrics are clever throughout, touching on everything from hipster posers in Can’t Take It Anymore to menstrual woes in Period. The tracks are short and to the point, Wet Lips don’t need to fill space with any musical flourishes and they certainly don’t beat around the bush. Despite this, Wet Lips is the kind of album you can listen to again and again and still find something different to take away each time.
The albumis gritty garage punk at its best. Not only does it offer solid beats to stomp your feet to, it also takes a number of stabs at the patriarchal structures of the punk music scene and the world in general. Wet Lips prove that they’re not here to take anyone’s shit, and isn’t that what punk is all about?
