Brendan Colwell’s Ruben Guthrie opens at the Red Stitch Actors Theatre in early February

Red Stitch’s 10th anniversary year opens with the Victorian premiere of Ruben Guthrie, written by Brendan Cowell.

This witty and insightful portrait of dependency in a prodigious talent opens early next month at the Red Stitch Actors Theatre in St. Kilda.

The play looks at the life of central character Ruben Guthrie, a precocious player at the top of the high-stakes advertising industry, with an innate wit and charm fuelled by endless parties and high-octane benders.

When he is forced to confront his demons and assess his future, he must also consider if his talent lies exclusively at the bottom of a bottle.

Colwell’s sensitive, engaging script brilliantly constructs the hard edges in the world of going straight.

Ruben Guthrie debuted in Sydney in 2008, directed by Wayne Blair. For the Red Stitch season, Brendan Cowell will direct the production, with Daniel Frederickson in the title role. Daniel will be joined by fellow Red Stitch ensemble members David Whiteley, Andrea Swift, Erin Dewar and Red Stitch graduate actor for 2011, Anna Samson, alongside guest actors Ian Rooney and Simon Maiden.

Due to the sell-out success of the 2010 season, Red Stitch will be adding four extra shows to each production in 2011, with the inclusion of Saturday matinees.

The season begins on Friday February 4, and ends on Saturday March 5, with two preview performances on February 2-3. Tickets are $34 for adults, $24 for concessions and $20 for students (I.D. is required), and can be booked at www.redstitch.net or by calling (03) 9533 8083.
