Tommy Little takes it to the next level in ‘Good Talk’

At the height of his career as an entertainer, stand-up comedian and host of Whose Line Is It Anyway? Australia, Tommy Little has officially made his mark on The Forum Theatre. In his new show Good Talk, the local act demonstrates why he is fast becoming the on-stage storyteller of his generation.

Sharing personal anecdotes from various areas of his day-to-day life, Little displayed a casual charm and cheeky attitude as he weaved through topics that ranged from the random and abstract to the sexual, drunk and of course, disorderly. The Fitzroy-based comic set the ‘tell all’ hour up by informing us of the recent installation of security cameras in his apartment block and talked us through the turn of events that came before them.

To kick things off in true Melbourne style, Little took on Uber and lattes to open his show while using the late comers as his props and conversation starters. From the man down the front with one hell of a mullet to the ‘apparent tradie’ dressed in an exquisite suit, Little warmed up the audience by simply using the audience itself to ad-lib.

Surrounded by the sophistication of a newly renovated Forum Theatre, Little soon touched on his trip to the incredibly sexy Spain, showcasing his talent for impressions and accents. As the entertainer highlighted the contrast between the Spanish and Australian culture, it became all too clear how much of a culture shock he had encountered while on his holiday. However, the real surprise came with Little’s admission of being easily emotionally moved – from the sweet to the scary.

Moving onto relationships and some sexual innuendo, Little talked “dick pics”, flatulence rules in a new couple and dirty talk in the bedroom. Revealing a tale of a disappointing performance on his end, Little has the crowd revelling in his misfortune “down in Tassie”.  More impressive than anything was the ability to share such scandal while retaining his light, less confronting style of comedy.

Bringing his show to close with two longer narratives – one about boxing with one of the greats, the other about a late-night out with an unfortunate ending, it becomes immediately clear why his apartment building now needs a functioning security system. Without even breaking a sweat, Little delivers a witty, punch-line packed performance that takes you on one interesting time loop.

Also performing alongside Gosling this Melbourne International Comedy Festival, there’s no question as to why Tommy Little was able to secure one of the best stages in the city – for he surely does provide the good talk.
