This old Thornbury warehouse is your new hotspot for electronic parties

Words by Mike Cusack

And other electronic music news.

Novel, the promoters behind Pitch Music and Arts Festival and B3 have secured a permanent home for large scale events in Thornbury. The 3000 capacity space, is a part of the Furlan Club – one of the oldest Italian clubs in Melbourne. The sprawling events and sporting complex sits in an industrial area in the outer corner of Thornbury – the lack of residential and hospitality neighbours obviously being ideal. Oh, and you know what else is ideal? The Furlan Club has one of the few remaining 24-hour liquor licenses in Melbourne. Could this be Melbourne’s Berghain? Honestly, I doubt Novel have the balls to throw a 60-hour, 3000 capacity rave (and Aussies are just not as good at pacing themselves as Germans) so I doubt it, but who knows. Novel reckon it’s gonna be good to go in September with the opening party to be announced in the coming weeks.

Soothsayer have confirmed that their day festival in Melbourne’s RMIT university grounds will return for a second crack in November. The inaugural event last year saw acts like Cut Copy, CC:DISCO, KLLO and Andy Garvey tearing up the picturesque inner-city grounds.

While experimental UK producer Actress has announced via a series of tweets that he’s got a new album coming later this year entitled Karma and Desire and that’ll be mixed by ‘Chaos III’. Whether that’s a person or something else (his previous release involved a learning program called Young Paint) has not been clarified. His label Ninja Tune has confirmed it’s real and will be out in October.

The inaugural Hybrid Festival is coming up at the end of the June and looks to be an exciting addition to the Melbourne cultural landscape. Seeking to expose the more unusual, experimental and challenging aspects of electronic music and it’s intertwining relationship to art, the curators (team members of LEFAG, Bizarro and Crown Ruler) have locked down an impressive list of names to melt your mind with. Names like, Stingray 313 (USA), Omar S (USA), Fatima Al Qadiri (GER) and Gabber Eleganza (ITA) as well as locals like Female Wizard, Kirkis, Hannah Lockwood and Simona. It goes down in a two-level warehouse in Kensington on Saturday June 29, with an after party being held at Francis28 featuring the synthesiser-obsessed Legowelt, performing live under his experimental alias, Gladio.
