The concert series that completely breaks down genre as you know it

If using a rubber chicken during a show doesn’t scream ‘genre-bending’, we don’t know what does.

If you feel like stepping out of your musical comfort zone a little, Melbourne theatre darling La Mama might have the answer.

La Mama Musica is a monthly series highlighting artists that experiment with music and sound. The August instalment of the series features cellist Teresa Blake performing a brand new set that integrates vocals and electronics. Musica curator Gemma Horbury says the series is deliberately meant for musical ideas that are less than conventional.

Musica’s always embraced those artists working in the gaps, people experimenting with stuff that doesn’t quite fit the pub or the concert hall,” Horbury said.

Blake’s set is the opening performance for CYBER-DEEP, a genre-bending electronic show featuring poet LAY the Mystic and guitarist Diego Villalta. LAY the Mystic recently featured in the music clip for Mojo Juju’s ‘Native Tongue (Reprise)’.

La Mama Musica’s next event takes place on Monday August 19. For tickets, head to the theatre website.
