The Australian Women in Music Awards announce 2021 return

Words by Arielle Richards

Affecting much needed systemic change in the industry.

Ahead of celebrations for International Women’s Day, the Australian Women in Music Awards (AWMA) have confirmed their return this October. Across two days in Brisbane on October 5 and 6, the annual event will continue AWMA’s mission to highlight women’s achievements and value in an industry which has long seen the odds unfairly stacked against them.

What you need to know

  • AWMA will return this year, after having their 2020 ceremony postponed due to COVID
  • The event will take place across October 5 and 6 in Brisbane
  • AWMA’s mission is to affect systemic change in the Australian music industry, recognising women’s achievements, contributions and value

With a key focus on improving visibility for First Nations and multicultural artists across the sector, AWMA 2021 will recognise women working in technical, live and studio production, artistry, backstage, onstage, songwriting, photography, music journalism, classical music, leadership, humanitarian work and more.

The program will include a series of forums, including a keynote address at Brisbane’s Callie Hotel and an awards ceremony, concert and cocktail party at the Tivoli.

The announcement comes at a fraught time for women in the industry – and moreover across this country – with recent allegations of bullying and assault in the music and entertainment sectors circulating on social media, whilst in politics, allegations of toxic culture and sexual assault are dominating headlines.

“It is appalling that while AWMA is working to empower women in the music industry, the toxic culture that prevents women from succeeding, continues to prevail,” AWMA founding director, Vicki Gordon says.

“Every new ‘disturbing’ revelation about the inappropriate behaviour in the Australian Music Industry confirms the importance of AWMA and the work we are doing to empower, elevate, celebrate and give voice to women.”

“Save the dates for AWMA 2021, stay safe and don’t give up the fight.”
