Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is playing all your favourite music from the Studio Ghibli films

My Neighbour Totoro

Stock up on some Ghibli goodness with these special performances.

While Netflix has excited Studio Ghibli fans (aka everyone) by adding a huge slate of the Japanese animation studio’s films to its catalogue, The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is going one better with this unmissable experience.

Bringing a bunch of iconic Studio Ghibli films to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl this month, MSO will transport you to the faraway worlds of some of cinema’s most beloved animated works.

Conducted by long-time collaborator Joe Hisaishi, the concerts will explore the mesmerising scores of some of Ghibli’s greatest, including Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. What’s more, the films will be playing on a huge screen while the orchestra performs alongside it.

Originally slated as a one-night-only deal, huge demand for tickets saw the addition of a second show. It should come as no surprise that tickets were snapped up so fast, considering when this concert was performed in 2018, tickets sold out in just minutes.

To fully encapsulate the wonder of director Hayao Miyazaki’s creations, the MSO will be joined by a full children’s choir and marching band.

Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki will be performed at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Saturday February 29 (sold out) and Sunday March 1. Tickets via the MSO website.
