“As bent as a snake”: Crowded House’s first single in a decade is a curious wonky pop number

Words by Tom Parker

Accompanied by a clip featuring Mac DeMarco.

The legendary Crowded House are back with a new track – their first new music since 2010’s Intriguer. ‘Whatever You Want’ explores the incessant deception currently ruling today’s world, pointing the finger at the deceitful types who will happily swindle you for their own good.

Musically, the song is a bubbly wonky pop number that bounces along like a Melbourne punter heading to the pub for their first tap beer in months. Buoyant harmonies circle Neil Finn’s vocals as jangly guitars wander in and out.

The song’s chorus is underpinned by the constant cry, “People will tell you whatever you want/Whatever you want“, and while the overarching message is well-intentioned, the track certainly doesn’t set the world on fire.

As crazy as a kick/As bent as a snake,” Finn continues in peculiar fashion. “They will follow him down/To the edge of the cliff/And if he tells them to jump/They will jump right in,” the frontman sings elsewhere.

Lyrically, the song isn’t anything adventurous or innovative but will certainly gratify a fanbase famished of fresh Crowded House material.

‘Whatever You Want’ comes alongside a new clip, featuring a cameo from Mac DeMarco who’s just woken up after a big night and is trying to piece his memory back together.
