Who Are You Supposed To Be?

Who Are You Supposed To Be? is a gorgeous, funny love story set in the world of comic conventions and fandom.

Upon first meeting, Gene (Robert Lloyd) and Ash (Jennifer Lusk) instantly have issues with each other. Gene cannot comprehend why, as a woman, Ash has dressed up as the Doctor, while Ash is offended by the thought that Gene thinks she is a fake geek girl. Leading into a delightful ongoing debate about women, men and geek and fan culture, we get to follow the pair through the convention and witness a most wonderful emotional and romantic connection between the pair.

Keith Gow has an absolutely fantastic show on his hands. This isn’t just a story about Doctor Who and geeks. It’s about love, friendship, feminism, masculinity, mental issues and accepting people for who they are. It’s about finding a place where you can be yourself and finding others who understand you. And at its core, it is about how humans simply desire connection with another person.

As performers, Lusk and Lloyd are engaging and believable and have a wonderfully awkward chemistry that draws you into their world. The set, lighting and sound are incredibly simple and allows the focus to shine directly on the performers and their story.

Turning the traditional rom-com story of boy meets girl on its head, this is a charming and delightful show that will satisfy the geek hiding within all of us. And yes, this reviewer squealed when they referenced Buffy.
