What to do once you’ve got your ATAR results

Ah, ATAR results day, how we loathe you.

Friday December 14 marks the dreaded release of high school marks, and kids around the state will have a stronger idea of whether their university dreams will become a reality. If you’re on track to get your ATAR after a marathon season of VCE exams, here’s what you need to before and after that fateful moment.

Firstly, take a deep breath. Taking on ATAR exams is no easy task and it’s important to remember high school kids are under a lot of pressure to do well. Get some ice-cream and take a load off.

Once you see that number, you might leap with joy or sink to an all-time low. If you absolutely nailed it — great! Maybe it’s worth just taking the time to look over your preferences to see if they’re in order. Have you picked biology instead of botany? Podiatry instead of pediatrics? Double-check that shit.

On the flipside, if you didn’t get what you wanted, it might be worth doing some research into alternative entry pathways. Universities aren’t stupid, and they know that wannabe university students come from all walks of life. Your ATAR is not the be all and end all of your education and there is always another way.

Whether happy or sad, Australian Catholic University is running a Know Your Options information session, which will give you guidance on what to do next with your ATAR. Maybe you’ve had a change of mind about what course you want to study. Perhaps you just need a real-live human being to calm your nerves, instead of a faceless website. Either way, ACU’s Know Your Options session is your best bet.

Don’t worry, you’ll forget about that pesky number in six months time.
