In an attempt to stick it to the man, I tasked an artificially intelligent bot to write the most punk article it could. It didn’t get everything right but gave it a red hot crack. Here’s what it came up with:
Over time, punk became a blanket term for a variety of styles. It was a term first applied to bands like the Sex Pistols. ClassicPunk bands, also known simply as Punkbands. You have bands like the Ramones, Black Flag and the Stooges, to name but a few.
In New York, the Ramones were the first punk band. In London, it was the Sex Pistols. On both sides of the Atlantic, young bands began to abandon the tonal excesses that characterized mainstream hard rock and reduce the music to the essentials. It wasn’t until the mid-1970s that punk became a genre in its own right, although there were several bands that flirted with what became known as punk rock, including the likes of Black Flag, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Clash.
In the late 1970s, established bands such as the Sex Pistols and Clash developed or became part of a new punk sound like Ramones. Alternative rock, a subgenre of punk, became popular in the 1980s and early 1990s. It was a more accessible mainstream genre that combined musical elements from punk with more danceable rhythms and sophisticated production. The hardcore groups from the 1990s played grunge, emo and ska-core music.
Most punk bands of the 1970s also produced and distributed their albums through informal channels. With the kind of music these bands played, the most rebellious youth picked them up and associated them with offensively printed t-shirts. It was a constant change and change in punk rock.
The look and dress style that often characterizes punk rock is actually a form of rock established in garage rock. The electronic rock world seems to be extensive for most musicians, but the term “electronic rock” has changed over the years as emerging bands use different electronic instruments. A multitude of new electronic genres have been created that synchronise the electronic music produced, which is heavily dependent on the instruments that produce the sound and the musicians who express the music.
Whereas punk is generally seen as a reaction to the mainstream of rock’n’roll, punk has placed greater value on the art of making and performing music than music itself. The event cemented the reputation of punk rock and was published in Rolling Stone the following week. As the music became more acceptable to mainstream audiences and the genre itself branched into several subgenres, punk rock slowly faded.
