With a killer film clip, to boot.
2018 was a big year for Melbourne punk-rock duo Mannequin Death Squad. Between the release of their belter of a single ‘Honey Punch’ and the time spent recording new material with renowned Australian producer Mark Opitz (Cold Chisel, Divinyls, INXS, Bad//Dreems), it seems this year is set to be another whopper.
Mannequin Death Squad welcome their latest single ‘Blue’ into the world today, coupled with a video clip that’s bound to be the best love story you see this Valentine’s Day. Thrashing drums and serrated riffs serve as a backdrop to a skateboarding gorilla cruising around Melbourne eating bananas and throwing back stubbies after being booted out of the house, because why not?
On the surface, it’s a pretty lighthearted clip, but ‘Blue”s lyrics add a little more depth to a story with which we can all relate — whether you’re human or ape.
“Basically Dan has been begging me for so long to have a skateboarding gorilla in one of our clips and I finally cracked,” says El, one half of Mannequin Death Squad.
“‘Blue’ is a song I wrote at 16 years of age in my ’90s poster-drowned out room. It feels to me like an angsty break-up song. It’s about who we vilify when we’re feelin’ kinda blue.”
If one thing’s for sure, a skateboarding ape and some blistering grunge is truly an unbeatable combo.
