Malcura take us back.
Melbourne Flamenco kings Malcura have earned themselves a reputation on the local scene for their ability to take a traditional genre and decorate it with flair and exuberance. An acoustic band at their core, the three-piece catapult from their Flamenco and Latin influences to harness an unfettered rock’n’roll attitude that sets them apart from the crowd.
Now the band are back with a new video shot by Melbourne filmmaker Alex Given. Set in the 1950s, the clip for new track, ‘Captain Snus’, sees the outfit let loose on stage before a rapturous crowd. As if they’re performing on a talk show, Malcura strut and waltz around stage like they’ve got nervous energy to burn making for an absorbing five minutes.
It’s part parody, part rock’n’roll all wrapped up in an effervescent bundle of fun. The clip culminates in a comical closing interview with lead guitarist Josh Voce – it’s clear Malcura know where to find their humour which adds an endearing touch.
The track itself captures a wide range of genres including classic Flamenco, surf rock and Gypsy jazz, as well as Mariachi and death metal elements. It’s a versatile mix.
