Tyler Nakoa beautifully balances light and shade in his haunting new single, ‘Island’

The single marks the first taste of his forthcoming EP.

Bellingen-based folk singer-songwriter Tyler Nakoa has revealed the first glimpse of his forthcoming EP Step on in with the release of his brand-new single, ‘Island’.

Nakoa’s music often sees his nomadic spirit seeping through into his storytelling as he explores roads less travelled. On ‘Island’, however, the focus is on our inner journeys as he battles through the dark recesses of the human mind to reach a bright, airy sense of clarity.

Sombre cello, beautifully played by Georgia Shine, dances alongside Nakoa’s softly-strummed acoustic guitar melody, weaving between lingering, sombre notes and fleeting moments of fluttering frenzy. All the while, Nakoa’s soft rasp and moving lyrics sweep you in and envelop you.

Recorded at Echidna Studios in the Dandenong Ranges, ‘Island’ embodies the serene nature of its surrounds. Subtle yet powerful and fearless in its vulnerability, the track is the first look at Nakao’s new sonic route which sees him exploring a fuller sound as he balances light and shade.

Listen to ‘Island’ below.
