“A rare and gifted artist”: A.B. Original’s Trials signs to Island Records Australia

A.B. Original

A huge milestone for the multi award-winning artist.

Trials, who you might know as one half of the lauded Australian hip hop act A.B. Original alongside Briggs, has just signed to Island Records/Universal Music Australia in a huge achievement for the Ngarrindjeri artist.

The producer’s first involvement with the label will be the release of his debut EP, set to be revealed later this year. The EP will feature many collaborations with both domestic and international artists and is set to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

With Trials, his management and the label all based in different states, the fantastic news was delivered over Zoom.

“Suffa [from Hilltop Hoods] first introduced me to Trials’ music via Golden Era Records and the Adelaide hip hop scene,” Universal Music Australia Managing Director, Michael Taylor, said of the signing.

“I was hooked on Trials’ stuff from then! His production, his beats, his voice, his take on hip-hop … it all has the unique ability to be fun and yet still carry that important message. That’s a rare gift, and Trials is a rare and gifted artist. We’re so excited to welcome him to Island Records Australia.”

Trials echoed Taylor’s excitement.

“I’ve been crazy fortunate to work on a wide range of music and productions in my life and I’m beyond amped to finally put everything I’ve learnt along the way into my own records,” Trials said. “The team at Island have always been supportive of my sounds from Ben Martin and Golden Era to now Michael Taylor and Universal and I’m looking forward to making even more noise with them this year.”

A.B. Original won albums across the board for their 2017 LP, Reclaim Australia, so it will be fascinating to hear more from Trials in a solo setting.
