Lifted from their forthcoming debut album, God I’m Such a Mess.
The music of Melbourne outfit Cry Club doesn’t bear any regular descriptors. From the blazing bubblegum punk of ‘DFTM’ to the effervescent indie rock of ‘Obvious’, Cry Club have just arrived with ‘Lighters’ – a striking acoustic ballad that sees the band at their most vulnerable yet.
‘Lighters’ is the next track from the band’s forthcoming debut album, God I’m Such a Mess, set for release on Friday November 13. The record will celebrate all of the Cry Club idiosyncrasies listeners have come to know and love since they burst onto the scene in 2018. Vibrantly textured from a production standpoint, God I’m Such a Mess sees vocalist Heather Riley and guitarist Jono Tooke at their most confident and visceral.
“God I’m Such a Mess. It honestly says it all. These past few years have been extremely tough for everyone – it’s easy to feel nihilistic or want to give up, and each new hurdle seems so much fucking bigger than the last one,” the band says of the album.
“This album is really about telling yourself it’s OKAY to be upset. It’s okay to cry, to be angry, to be anxious, to struggle because if you’re honest about not being okay, it makes it easier to start walking the path towards being okay again. It’s okay to throw your whole heart and soul into something, even if it fails.”
Cry Club are intrinsically vulnerable, wearing their heart on their sleeve, providing a sanctuary for anyone who ever feels down, or anxious, or vulnerable themselves. Having lost a large majority of their shows and festival slots as a result of COVID-19 and last summer’s bushfires, it will be fantastic to see Cry Club kick back into gear when live music ramps up again.
