Theatre Works has revealed its 2020 Midsumma Festival program

And tickets to all shows are just $20.

This Friday will see Theatre Works transformed into a Midsumma Festival hub, presenting five Australian works over three weeks, alongside two workshops and showcases.

Making its Melbourne premiere as part of Midsumma and kicking off the program at Theatre Works comes This Bitter Earth, a hilariously introspective performance exploring everyday queer existence. From navigating dating apps and dick pics to wine fights and hazy nightclubs, This Bitter Earth is an anthology of millennial crises.

This Bitter Earth will run parallel to Poorly Drawn Shark, a side-splitting, queer take on the Eat, Pray, Love motif and Australia’s fetishisation of South East Asia. Tackling self-loathing and problematic behaviour, this production is sure to incite some self-reflecting.

Also coming to Theatre Works this month is BIRDOIR, a glamorous cabaret presented by a troupe of human-bird hybrids. Featuring some of Melbourne’s best burlesque, dance, cabaret and comedy performers, BIRDOIR will have audiences flocking to catch its Midsumma run.

February brings New Balance to the Theatre Works stage. Making its world premiere, New Balance is a touching tapestry of queer stories of intimacy, self-discovery, pain and growth.

Closing out the program, Jake Stewart (Fraternal, Boys Have Skin, The Helendale Nude Footy Calendar) explores Australian masculinity in his latest work, Leopard Print Loincloth. Be sure to check your ego at the door.

In the spirit of inclusion, this year’s 2020 at $20 initiative will see all Midsumma shows at Theatre Works priced at $20.

“At Theatre Works, one of our key values is accessibility,” says Theatre Works General Manager, Dianne Toulson. “We are committed to removing the barriers to participation and high ticket prices are one of the biggest barriers that prevent audiences from experiencing theatre across the board.”

Midsumma Festival takes over Theatre Works from Friday January 17 until Saturday February 8. For tickets and more information, head to the venue website
