The border will close at midnight on Tuesday July 7.
The border between New South Wales and Victoria will close for the first time in 100 years as a result of Victoria’s current spike in COVID-19 cases.
The decision was made this morning in a meeting between Victorian Premier Dan Andrews, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Prime Minister Scott Morrison and will take effect from 11:59pm tomorrow night.
Andrews hosted a press conference this morning to announce the decision, saying he believes it is, “The smart call, the right call”.
The closure will be enforced on the NSW side of the border as not to drain Victoria’s resources. There will be permit systems in place to allow for unavoidable interstate travel such as for work or healthcare.
Premier Berejiklian will host a press conference later today to provide more details about the border closure.
