How did you come to play Melbourne Hill Country Blues? I never liked that 12-bar dad-rock stuff that gets passed off as blues a lot these days. My first idol was Son House, who made his first records way back in 1930. So I started playing guitar in open tunings like him. Then I discovered Junior Kimbrough who had a real interesting, one chord, droning blues style which I became enamoured with. He called it Mississippi Hill Country Blues. Then came along a local Melbourne guy called Chris Russell, I started taking a lot of influence from his style of blues – that link made my music feel a little more Melburnian.

Tell us about your new single ‘Brother, I am Your Keeper’. I was trying to write something commercial. Well what I think of as being commercial probably isn’t very. It’s loosely inspired by the story of Cain and Abel in the Old Testament.

You’re part way through a 42-date tour. What are your top tips for staying lively on the road? I spend tours smashing parmas, drinking lots of beer and staying up late with people I meet at gigs. When we get home during the week I spend a day hibernating in my girlfriend’s bed. You’re probably supposed to drink water and exercise, but my body’s not built for that lifestyle.

What do you love about making music? The connections that it lets you build with people. People that come to shows are like old friends who I’m only meeting for the first time.
