The Glorious : Last Song That I Write

Led by singer/songwriter David Jon Mather, The Glorious are a Melbourne three-piece modelled after The Band (apparently) and Neil Young (optimistically). Taken from their debut album, Last Song That I Write is a kind of Dave Matthews folk rock dirge with an intractable adult contemporary quality – too sweet, too wistful, too nineties to be cool, but maybe really affecting for the right set of ears. The lyrics are interesting, if only because they’re so naked and hopeless: “This could be the last song that I write, I could almost let it lie. This could be the last song that I write, I get closer every night.” I don’t like their music, but it’s still pretty sad to think of sweet old David Jon packing it in. You stick with it Dave. Adult contemporary is very popular with old people.
