The Drones release new live album recorded at Melbourne’s iconic Spanish Club

From their performance on March 4, 2006.

This is just what we needed. Legendary Australian rockers The Drones just released a live record, their second in a string of releases that’s reignited some intrigue around the band.

Simply titled LIVE Vol 2, the album recalls one of two performances at Melbourne’s iconic Spanish Club from March 2006. The band had just returned from six months in Europe, where they lived in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district, and were frothing at the mouth to give their loyal Melbourne audience the homecoming shows they deserved.

Reminiscing about the time on their Bandcamp, The Drones remember it being quite an interesting period in the band’s history.

“I remember we were all still jet-lagged. This is just before Gala Mill was released so we weren’t playing much of it yet even though we’re [sic] recorded it a year earlier. We had some record company dramas at the time. Anyway, that didn’t stop us enjoying those two lovely autumn nights blasting the crap out of everybody’s weekend. If it was a weekend, I can’t remember. Turn it up,” one of the band’s members said.

It comes after the release of LIVE Vol 1, which drew from a range of performances between 2003 and 2005, just after the band moved from Perth to Melbourne. At this time, the band was made up of Gareth Liddiard, Fiona Kitschin, Christian Strybosch and Rui Pereira.

The Drones have been on hiatus since the release of 2016’s critically-acclaimed Feelin Kinda Free and ensuing shows as Liddiard and Kitschin’s new band, Tropical Fuck Storm, takes centre stage.

Let’s hope these dribs and drabs are a sign of more activity from the seminal outfit.
