Season six won’t be aired amidst the pandemic.
Season six of Black Mirror has been put on hold while we ride out the pandemic as the show’s creator, Charlie Booker, believes the current climate is too bleak for the series’ dystopian narratives.
Part of Black Mirror‘s appeal has always been its realism. Despite the series’ varying sci-fi fantasies, its episodes centre around technologies that could very likely exist in the not so distant future.
In the current climate in which most interactions we have with other people are conducted through a screen and when we do venture outside, our movements are limited and the distance we keep from others is enforced, it feels like we’ve slipped into a Black Mirror episode.
In an interview with Radio Times, Booker admitted that he didn’t feel comfortable adding the types of stories told through Black Mirror to the world as we currently know it and has put the new season on hold as a result.
“At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on [Black Mirror],” he said.
Since debuting in 2011, the Netflix series has featured episodes from a slate of guest writers and directors, as well as welcoming actors such as John Hamm, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anthony Mackie, Andrew Scott, Miley Cyrus and many more.
Exactly how long season six will remain on hold is yet to be seen, but let’s hope it isn’t too long.
