Teja Palace’s debut single, ‘Listen’, is a haunting electronic number

Words by Gabriela Caeli Sumampow

Filled with industrial electronics and profound lyrics.

Brisbane’s Teja Palace has just made her debut with ‘Listen’ – a track exploring the importance of listening as a social construct. It’s about listening to others, having respect for one another, and honouring sacredness in others.

Written during a period of deep healing as Teja learnt a lot about the traditional ways and history of Australia, ‘Listen’ is embodied by haunting industrial electronics – an alarming veneer for the bold call to action of the lyrics underneath.

The song is inspired by teachings of Teja’s own deep listening, as well as other personal discoveries, whether internal or external. The gravity of such learnings is echoed in the song’s chorus: “I bow down to your wisdom/I bow down and I listen.

The song experiments with Teja’s versatile vocals – adding layers upon layers to create a mystic track, emphasising the “new reality” Teja has come to realise in the wake of writing her debut single.

“I am asking the audience to walk past their fears that are holding them back from the ability to be heard so we can listen and heal,” Teja says of the song.

After forging a successful DJ career that saw her work with brands such as Jeep, Mercedes Benz, David Jones and more, Teja was compelled to explore a new calling, where she’d write her own music – allowing herself to communicate her own unique message.

Artists such as Grimes and FKA twigs, both known for their intricate and profound music, have inspired Teja’s creative process – something which has seen the artist write a bank of music across the last three years, some of which will be released in 2021.
