Supersense: Festival of the Ecstatic unveils radical 2019 program

Words by Ashley Diamantis

The festival returns with a hypnotic collision of music, performance, dance and theatre.

Arts Centre Melbourne and Australian New York-based performer Sophia Brous have revealed the 2019 program for Supersense: Festival of the Ecstatic. For its third iteration, the festival will feature a lineup of international music icons, theatre, dance and performance rituals.

Presented within the underground labyrinth of the Arts Centre, the festival brings together an extraordinary program of innovators, taking audiences on an exhilarating journey through epic artistry and ecstatic rituals over a three-day period.

The 2019 program boasts an exceptional lineup including New Zealand songwriting phenomenon Aldous Harding, avant-garde jazz group The Art Ensemble of Chicago, cult musician John Maus and Master Iraqi Maqam vocalist Hamid Al-Saadi. Supersense has also locked in American theatre legend Robert Wilson to perform and direct revolutionary 20th-century composer John Cage’s A Lecture on Nothing.

Brous, who curated the program, said the program is designed to bring together sacred and profane performances.

“The festival is a journey into our human pursuit for ecstasy and release…continu[ing] to inform our quest for ecstatic revelation through art, song, performance and community,” Brous said.

Supersense: Festival of the Ecstatic will be held at the Arts Centre Melbourne from Friday August 23 to Sunday August 25. Tickets go on sale Monday June 3 at 10am. Ticketing information and the full program are available via the Arts Centre Melbourne’s website.
