Louis Nicoll presents a concert of sonatas by Ginastera, Beethoven and Liszt, along with preludes and fugues by Bach.
The first sonata is Beethoven’s 13th in E flat major, marked ‘Sonata quasi Fantasia’ as it is to be performed without breaks between the movements. The final sonata is Liszt’s so-called ‘Dante’ sonata, marked ‘Fantasia quasi Sonata’; an inversion of Beethoven’s subtitle. Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera’s piano sonata of 1981 forms a contrast to the other two, a sonata cast in the more classical mould of 3 movements. Interwoven throughout, Louis will perform selections from Bach’s ‘Well-Tempered Clavier’.
20% of profits from the event will go towards Piano Project, a Melbourne-based charity that sponsors piano lessons for children who are new immigrants. Under 18s are welcome at this event, so long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult.
