Six gigs in Melbourne to check out this weekend

Huntly

No weekend plans? No problem.

Live N Local Closing Party at The Espy

To cap off another stellar Live N Local season, we’ve carefully curated a lineup of Huntly, Bad Bangs and Purr Usual for the closing party. Held at The Espy’s iconic Gershwin Room, the event will be the perfect occasion to soak up the talent oozing out of this city. It’s happening from 3pm on Saturday August 31. Tickets are free but be sure to reserve your spot here.

Hot August Nights at the Temperance Hotel

Having brought the heat back to Melbourne this winter with the return of its annual Hot August Nights series, South Yarra’s Temperance Hotel is finishing the season with a bang. This week’s instalment brings Australian house music legend John Course to the fore. It’s happening on Saturday August 31 from 7pm with free entry. More info here.

Low Down Sunday’s at Swamplands

With winter officially over this Sunday, what better way to celebrate than with Low Down Sunday’s at Swamplands? The Low Down Big Band will be playing classics from Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Buddy Rich while the bar makes sure your glass is never empty. It’s going down on Sunday September 1 from 4pm, free entry. More details here.

The Hornets at The Lomond Hotel

Comprising members from The Black Sorrows, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, and Paul Kelly’s band, it’s no surprise The Hornets are one of Australia’s most beloved blues bands. They’ll be charging into The Lomond Hotel on Saturday August 31 from 9:30pm for a free show. More info here.

Mark Howard at Downstairs

Melbourne’s Mark Howard is set to shake up Downstairs Bistro and Lounge on Friday August 30 with his slick fusion of high energy rock, smooth soul and swampy blues. Grab some drinks and dinner from the Southbank restaurant and catch Howard from 5pm until 8pm. Free entry. More info here.

All Night – Disco Edition at Thornbury Local

Between the hours of 9pm and 3am this Saturday August 31, Thornbury Local will revisit some iconic disco classics, sorely underrated tracks and innovative, electronica-infused mashups. The good times will be aided by the disc-flipping talent of local DJs Mickey Space, Citizen.com and Luke Juice. The best part? It’s all free. For more info, head to the Facebook event.
