Podcasts have quickly become one of the biggest forms of entertainment over the past decade and the best film podcasts are entertainment about entertainment (ooh meta). What is such a simple concept, a person or group of people talking about a subject, is now a multi-million dollar industry that’s transfixed people across the world. Whether you’re a true crime fan, enjoy celebrity interviews or just want to better yourself, there’s a podcast for you.

For film fans, podcasts are a great way to learn more about your favourite flicks and actors. So, if you’re a film nerd and want to know more about the industry, here are seven podcasts you need to hear.

The Rewatchables

Media mogul Bill Simmons is the founder of The Ringer, one of the leading podcast networks in America, dealing with pop culture and sport. One of the company’s best podcasts is The Rewatchables. Each episode takes a look at a film that, as the title suggests, is rewatchable. A rotating roster of Ringer staff discuss each film using a variety of categories, including Best Quote, Half-Assed Internet Research and the Vincent Hanna “They Knew” award for overacting. Simmons is great at steering the chat towards each category and doesn’t suffer fools. Recent episodes have included special guests including Quentin Tarantino and the Safdie Brothers.

The Canon

Serious film nerds will get a kick out of The Canon. Host Amy Nicholson is joined by a different guest each week to discuss a particular noteworthy film and decide whether it deserves a spot in The Canon. Cinematic classics such as Goodfellas and Blade Runner are dissected along with pop culture fodder such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Starship Troopers. Nicholson consistently constructs strong, convincing arguments for each film in her mission to determine whether they make the cut.

How Did This Get Made?

Hosted by Paul Scheer (Veep, The Disaster Artist), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie, New Girl) and Jason Mantzoukas (The House, The League), this eclectic trio bring the laughs as they chat about some of Hollywood’s biggest missteps. Whether taking the piss out of the Fast & Furious franchise, discussing Alyssa Milano’s pants in video game adaptation Double Dragon or talking about the Dolph Lundgren classic Masters of the Universe, each episode takes a light-hearted look at the film industry. The live shows are more raucous and often include special guests – the Randall Park featuring look at Face/Off is particularly tremendous.

While you may not agree with this podcast’s mildly-aggressive title, Denzel Washington fans Kevin Avery and W. Kamau Bell make a great case as to why the Training Day star is a once-in-a-generation actor. Each episode sees the comedy duo discussing one of Washington’s films or talking with famous guests who know the man himself. What makes this podcast interesting is the sometimes-serious nature of the discussions, with Avery and Bell often delving into black history, politics and social issues amongst discussing quirky Washington facts and why Virtuosity might be his worst film.

The Qwipster Film Review Podcast
