Rubita’s eagerly-awaited debut album ‘Distinctive Thrill’ is an indie-pop buffet

The New Zealand-based musician has delivered a feast for the ears with her debut LP.

Three years in the making, Rubita has revealed her long-awaited debut album, Distinctive Thrill. A compilation of indie-pop gems, it’s proved worth the wait.

Rubita has been infatuated with the electric guitar since she first saw Marty Mcfly rocking out in Back to the Future. From there, she launched herself into guitar lessons and songwriting before going on to spend a year in Argentina where she became engrossed with Latin music.

After returning to Australia, she became the first female to graduate with a Bachelor in Music, majoring in electric guitar, at Otago University in 2015. Over the years since, she’s formed bands, released an EP and toured extensively and now, she’s ticked off another milestone with the release of her debut album.

Her years of studying music and various influences are evident across Distinctive Thrill, which spans a diverse spectrum of sonic flavours.

Opening with the jazzy fresh ‘Feel Alive’, the album is exciting from the moment the first note hits. From there, her love of Latin music rears its head in title track ‘Distinctive Thrill’ while the likes of ‘Let Me Know’ shows a more stripped-back side of Rubita.

Powerful, energetic and intoxicatingly dynamic, Distinctive Thrill is like a musical degustation that hits all the right notes.
