The designs have now been revealed for the Victorian Pride Centre, the first of its kind in Australia.

Housing institutions including the AIDS Councill, the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives, and the Melbourne Queer Film Festival, the building will act as a safe space and hub for LGBTI people.

The Pride Centre will open on Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, and is modelled after a similar centre in San Francisco.

Meanwhile, the State Government and Port Phillip Council have allocated $28 million in funding to see the project through to completion.

“It’s really important to celebrate what has been a very difficult history in many ways over a long period of time, but also give a place where communities and community organisations can congregate, can gather together, and can work with us and the community to end discrimination in all its forms,” said Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews as reported by The ABC

The design reveal was made at the same time as Midsumma Festival’s annual pride march, garnering its largest turnout in history with over 8,000 people taking to the streets.

Construction of the Victorian Pride Centre is expected to be completed by 2020.
