Premiere: Michael Waugh’s new single ‘Dirty River’ is a heartfelt love letter to Melbourne

The track is a tribute to this great city and the traditional owners of the land on which it sits.

Melbourne troubadour Michael Waugh has unveiled the first look at his forthcoming album with his new single, ‘Dirty River’. Dropping tomorrow, the track is a love letter to his home city and all the things that make it so special.

Penned in lockdown, ‘Dirty River’ draws from the almost ritualistic experiences that come with being a Melburnian and the snaking river that runs through the heart of the city.

“When you’re stuck within a 5k radius of your own home, you start to newly appreciate the beauty of your city,” says Waugh. “I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance of the Yarra, and on those precious masked walks, I became conscious of the importance of the river in the identity and history of my city.

“We live at a time when we all have opportunity to learn more about the story predating European invasion – and the spiritual significance of the Yarra runs through the heart of that story, too,’ he adds.

Nostalgic songwriting, smoky vocals and a warm, shimmering rock melody coalesce to create a truly touching track. From sinking beers at The Retreat to sipping coffee in Carlton cafes, it’s bursting with scenes familiar to anyone who has spent time living here.

To celebrate the new single and his forthcoming album, Waugh will hit the road in April for a tour spanning Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
