The future of the venue is unclear.
A petition launched yesterday to save Adelaide’s Thebarton Theatre from possible demolition has already reached an impressive 26,000 signatures within a day.
It was reported yesterday that the future of the beloved Adelaide theatre could be in doubt due to a series of major road projects currently underway in the city. Speaking to ABC Radio Adelaide’s Breakfast program yesterday, South Australia’s acting transport minister David Speirs said between 600 and 1,000 buildings in Adelaide’s west could be compulsorily acquired for the North-South Corridor road project but didn’t say the venue was in the clear.
“I’m not going to rule anything in or out,” Speirs said.
“But I acknowledge there are a lot of people in South Australia who have an affection for that building and others along that route.”
Thebarton Theatre regularly hosts iconic local and international acts such as King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Tex Perkins and Two Door Cinema Club. Staff from the theatre have said they haven’t received any official confirmation that the venue will be demolished.
“We trust that the government recognises the importance of Thebarton Theatre’s place in the state’s cultural identity,” a post on Facebook read.
“Thebby has one of the best acoustics in the state and has seen artists launch their careers and welcomed them home time after time.”
