Pentridge Prison to become 15-screen cinema from December

Words by Tom Parker

The iconic Melbourne landmark is getting a transformation.

Coburg’s historic Pentridge Prison has just revealed the opening date for its new cinema which was originally announced back in 2016.

The new complex will start screening flicks from December 2020 accommodating 1100 people across 15 cinemas. When the cinema kicks into gear, eagerly-awaited forthcoming films such as Coming 2 AmericaDeath on the Nile and Free Guy will be shown, supported by a Dolby Atmos soundsystem. Punters will also be able to enjoy a fully-licensed menu.

The new Pentridge Cinema comes courtesy of Palace Cinemas, the legends behind the likes of Palace Westgarth, The Kino, The Astor Theatre, Palace Cinema Como and more.

“So the news is out there… this December we can look forward to the opening of Pentridge Cinema! What better place to escape than an old prison after being cooped up for so long,” the cinema said via a Facebook post.

“Built within the infamous Pentridge Prison, this one-of-a-kind urban village breathes new life into Coburg while preserving its heritage and history (nothing torn down here!).”
