NGV Friday Nights unveils ’80s-inspired summer lineup

Flashback Fridays.

The beloved NGV Friday Nights series is returning this December, featuring a diverse selection of local and international talent.

The artists on the forthcoming lineup have been handpicked to bring a classic ’80s sound to the NGV garden — everything from disco to post-punk. What’s more, the NGV is partying with Melbourne queer party CLOSET to feature a range of DJs and performances artists throughout the evening.

International acts heading to the NGV this summer include New York City’s Ge-Ology, UK-based producer Alex Rita and Detroit’s Nicole Misha, among others. Representing the local scene will be Melbourne-born, LA-based singer Banoffee, nightlife veteran Soju Gang, DJ collective Interstellar Fugitives and plenty more.

The new handful of shows coincides with the world premiere of the NGV’s latest exhibition, Keith Haring | Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines. Haring and Basquiat were both artists in the late 20th century who used their talents to create idiosyncratic imagery and discuss complex radical political ideas. Their unique brand of visual language and use of symbols continues to influence contemporary visual culture today. The exhibition will feature more than 300 artworks, including public works, paintings, sculptures and photographs. As always, a ticket the NGV Friday Nights will also get you access to both the gig and the exhibition.
