New Melbourne music video platform broadcasts sets from bedrooms, garages, DIY studios and more

Cook Up is the new collaborative project from baked and Trouble Juice.

Music lovers have had their minds transported to transcendent realms through the likes of boundary-pushing music video platforms, KEXP, Tiny Desk, Colors, Sofar Sounds and Jam in the Van.

Creatives thought, “If people like film clips, why not create a more immediate, DIY alternative to music’s beloved visual accompaniment”. So bands and artists began performing live in front of a camera from all manner of settings – whether it was behind an office desk, at a radio station, or even in a kombi.

Now, there’s a new Melbourne kid on the block that’s predicating its creative model on a grassroots, at-home approach. Cook Up, as it’s called, showcases bands and artists from environments most accessible and comfortable to them.

We’re talking garages, bedrooms, practice spaces, DIY studios and other places where Melbourne musos typically hone their craft away from the stage. Because the Melbourne music scene is so keenly derived from a DIY ethos, Cook Up just makes sense.

Established by the teams at baked (another video platform in itself) and burgeoning Melbourne music blog Trouble Juice, Cook Up launched in late October and unveiled its first video on November 2. Emerging local wonky pop outfit Eggy were first off the block performing their unreleased song ‘Round Table’ live from guitarist/vocalist Zoe Monk’s living room.

For the second instalment of the series, Melbourne jangle-rockers Floodlights perform ‘Water’s Edge’, the first track from their stellar 2020 debut record From a View.

These are two videos in a string of many others set to be revealed over the coming weeks and months.

Get comfy, Melbourne music lovers.
