New documentary celebrates the unrivalled career of Melbourne icon Franco Cozzo

Words by Tom Parker

Palazzo di Cozzo will be screened on the ABC in 2021.

There’s a new documentary coming to your screens next year dedicated to Melbourne furniture icon Franco Cozzo. Palazzo di Cozzo was first announced in 2018 and was billed to be finished now – at the end of 2020 – in time for a 2021 release date.

Keep up with the latest film and TV news here.

Three years on and only now has its screening date been officially confirmed – the ABC’s 2021 schedule has just been released and Palazzo di Cozzo is featured within that.

If you’re not across the Franco Cozzo name, then it’s time to become acquainted. Since first moving to Melbourne from Italy in 1956 as a 21-year-old, Cozzo has slowly built an empire that stands as one of the most lucrative Melbourne businesses of the last century.

And it’s all in the name of furniture. Yet, Cozzo’s furniture company is no ordinary establishment – not every magnate can say they’ve attracted a dedicated fanbase built off their own personality and charisma.

The secret ingredient to Cozzo’s success is his affinity for arguably the biggest linchpin to any business – its marketing. Cozzo devised his business, and he was always going to be the face of it.

Since the ’80s, Cozzo’s face has been plastered across television screens the city over as the business is fervently advertised in timeless and since-iconic 60-second clips.

“Grand sale! Grand sale! Grand sale!” Cozzo hollers to begin one of his ’80s advertisements. “Where? In Brunswick and Footscray. Franco Cozzo have the pleasure to present to you il modernissimo bedroom suites, dining room, and wonderful lounge.”

Palazzo di Cozzo joins a number of other notable announcements for the ABC in 2021, including the return of acclaimed drama Total Control, alongside a new ten-episode season of Spicks and Specks. Shows such as The Newsreader, Cracking COVID, Why Are You Like This? and Strong Women will also be making their debut.
