‘Moulin Rouge! The Musical’ is coming to Melbourne

Ç’est vrai.

The Victorian Government has announced the Australian premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be arriving at the Regent Theatre in 2021.

The French love story of Christian and Satine is currently being told at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway. Based on the acclaimed 2001 film from Aussie director Baz Luhrmann, the theatrical production is directed by Alex Timbers with choreography by Sonya Tayeh.

In addition to the show’s arrival, the Regent Theatre will be getting a facelift ahead of the show kicking off. A combined $19.4 million from the Victorian Government and other financial backers will be spent on upgrading the theatre’s seating, bar, foyer, bathrooms and balcony.

The Regent Theatre was originally built in 1929, but suffered serious damage when a fire gutted parts of the venue in 1945.

Show dates have not yet been set for Moulin Rouge’s 2021 run.
