Victoria Police are working with local councils to install mobile surveillance cameras in public spaces around Melbourne.
Mobile surveillance units have appeared in parks and public spaces across Melbourne to monitor restriction breaches. Victoria Police are working with several local councils and the government to deploy cameras in various popular spots to catch and deter citizens from breaking the rules.
The mobile units have already appeared in Victoria Gardens and various other locations across Melbourne’s inner-south, though Victoria Police have confirmed that cameras have also been posted in other areas around Melbourne.
“The cameras can help to capture and deter breaches of Chief Health Officer directions as well as other crimes and community safety issues. For operational reasons we will not be providing commentary on how many of these units are being used or where and when they are positioned,” a spokesperson for Victoria Police told The Age.
Police have not advised how long they will continue to use mobile surveillance units to monitor Melburnians.
