Metal releases to keep an ear out for in 2019

We’ve certainly had a gigantic output of sick heavy metal records in 2018, but while the year is nearly over, 2019 is already looming strong. So, let’s take a look at some releases we have coming in the new year (Tool omitted due to the fact that, well, they have been dangling the carrot on that one for a little too long now).

You’ve probably heard the songs on the radio, or seen the huge online promotions, or large-scale street posters all over town, but if you haven’t, well it’s good to know that this serves a purpose. Bring Me The Horizon are set to bring the first big metal record of 2019, their six full-length entitled Amo. But apart from the Dani Filth guest vocal appearance on single ‘Wonderful Life’, it’s sounding more like it’s just going to go even further into the daring and futuristic stadium rock direction they’ve found themselves at the peak of. Bring Me The Horizon may have lost some of their teeth, but we’ll find out if their balls are bigger than ever or not when the album drops on Friday January 25.

Whether you prefer to simply say Deftones, or the Deftones, or The Deftones, one thing is for sure – turntable man Frank Delgado 100% confirmed that the nu-metal escapees have been in the studio working on the follow up to 2016’s Gore.

Swedish melodic death metal pioneers In Flames have become a terrible parody of something that no longer even sounds remotely like the same band. Seriously – the two new songs they’ve released from their thirteenth album I, The Mask are so disgustingly bad. Catch me maybe listening out of morbid curiosity on Friday March 1. At least the new Soilwork album Verkligheten out on Friday January 11 still sounds like Gothenburg.

While there definitely hasn’t been anything official stated in regards to this, little clips of Thy Art Is Murder members being at longtime producer Will Putney’s New Jersey-based studio have definitely come and gone from their Instagram stories in the last couple of months. One could assume that they are starting to work away at some new songs – and given that the mammoth CJ McMahon redemption album Dear Desolation came out in 2017, 2019 seems just about exactly on point for a typical album cycle.

LA’s Body Count is just about the most badass rap metal band of all time, and they let us know many months ago that Carnivore – the follow up to 2017’s Bloodlust – will be coming in 2019. I’m just wording you up in case you missed it directly from the mouth of my boy Ice T.

We’re also going to get new albums from Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Lamb of God, Devin Townsend Project, Carcass, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Exodus, Whitechapel, Steel Panther, Nightwish, Voyager, Killswitch Engage, Korn and apparently even AC/DC? A year for all the big names. Bring it on.
