Melbourne singer-songwriter Karen Harding reveals emotive heartbreak ballad, ‘I Didn’t Realise’

Words by Tom Parker

The local artist channels her despair through mournful lyricism and intimate melodies.

Melbourne singer-songwriter Karen Harding has just released her new single, ‘I Didn’t Realise’. A song about a heart-wrenching breakup, ‘I Didn’t Realise’ takes us through the healing journey, positioning us by Harding’s side as she sings of her own despair.

From the early torment of trying to understand what went wrong to the process of finally coming to terms with the breakup, Harding’s soft vocals are filled with anguish.

I didn’t realise that I had to say the right words/I always thought that I had all the answers,” Harding sings of her initial confusion, before she gradually comes to see the situation for what it was.

Harding’s lyricism is mournful but she’s also proud of her own strength, with the dialogue becoming more positive towards the song’s latter stages.

But here I am standing on my own two feet/And here I am living just the way it’s meant to be,” the narrative continues.

Harding wrote ‘I Didn’t Realise’ in the peak of COVID-19 on a piano she played growing up. With the chords laid out first, the lyrics eventuated naturally, with the song a product of Harding’s reflections – a simple moment of contemplation based on her emotions at the time.

Working with Josh Hennessy of Pivotal Music on the track, his production helped elevate the song from its intimate piano and vocal foundation to a track that also boasts strings, synths and other arrangements.
