Melbourne Museum’s Summer Plaza Series will feature a stack of outdoor performances from local acts.

Melbourne Music Week – Extended has joined forces with Melbourne Museum to present a series of outdoor gigs this summer. Taking place at the Melbourne Museum Plaza every Friday and Saturday night between January 8 and 23, the Summer Plaza Series boasts an incredible lineup of local acts.

The eclectic program kicks off with Halo Vocal Ensemble on Friday January 8. Helmed by MzRizk and featuring 12 artists including TATAFU, thando, Michaela Jayde and more, the Halo Vocal Ensemble looks to put a modern spin on choral music with performances of classic and contemporary R&B, soul, funk and hip hop.

Saturday January 9 will see The Operatives return to Melbourne Music Week with The Delorean Project, a futuristic journey through hip hop and R&B from Narrm/Melbourne featuring Flyboy Jack (Jordan Dennis X Jujo), Sophiya, Kobi Spice, Denzel M, Caleb The Rapper, Khiarra, Thatkidmaz, Yung Shogun, C00kie and Swerv.

On Friday January 15, Anti Fade Records will present a showcase featuring Bananagun, Primo! and Parsnip, with each band set to perform tracks lifted from their stellar 2020 releases The True Story of…Sogni and Adding Up, respectively.

The following night will bring an electronic extravaganza as MMW presents three of Melbourne’s finest electronic artists, LOODS, Jennifer Loveless and Roy Blues in what promises to be an evocative exploration pushing the genre’s sonic bounds.

The series’ penultimate performance on Friday January 22 will pay homage to Tony Allen, an integral artist in the development of afrobeat as part of Fela Kuti’s Africa ’70 band before launching a solo career spanning 40 years.

A celebration of his expansive body of work The Tony Allen Experience: A Live Tribute will comprise performances by Nui Moon, members of the Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Yoosa Haile and John McCall, while thando, Bobby Alu, NFA Jones, Cazeaux O.S.L.O. and DJ Manchild will also appear.

Closing out the Summer Plaza Series on Saturday January 23 comes Space Echo Plaza, an improvisational performance featuring some of Naarms biggest music heavyweights including Found Heads Collective – Perrin Moss, Javier Fredes, Julien Wilson and Barney McCall, plus Maria Moles, Aarti Jadu and DJ Shio Otani.

Tickets are strictly limited, so get in quick!

Melbourne Museum’s Summer Plaza Series is going down from Friday January 8 until Saturday January 23 as part of Melbourne Music Week Extended. Tickets are on sale now via the MMW or Melbourne Museum website.
