Meet Drunken Donuts, your new favourite boozy dessert hybrid

Words by Talia Rinaldo via Forte

Please give a warm and boozy welcome to Drunken Donuts.

Cocktails are great. Desserts are great. So it only makes sense that, when combined, they create the greatest hybrid in human history.

The humans over in Thomastown, who clearly want us to live our best damn lives, launched Drunken Donuts back in February, giving a beloved childhood treat a grown-up twist.

The sugar-glazed donuts, which are made with a shot of booze, take inspiration from Melbourne bars and look like the cocktails they taste like, just in the form of a doughy-treat.

“In 2018 we had a crazy idea! What if we made alcohol-infused?” the Facebook page reads. “The result has been more fantastic than we could ever have dreamed – not only do we get to create delicious and unforgettable mouth moments, but we get to see smiles and people coming together every single day!”

On the menu you’ll find the Bailey’s, made with creamy Baileys-spiked coffee custard and glazed with chocolate; Coffee and Rum, filled with rum custard and glazed with coffee glaze; Apple Whiskey, made with their signature series apple-whiskey custard and glazed with apple-whiskey icing; and a Pina complete with pineapple-pina colada custard, dunked in vanilla glaze and drizzled with coconut shavings.

Our favourites though are hands-down the Nutella Cognac, filled with Nutella Cognac custard and glazed with white chocolate; the iconic Grasshopper, filled with creme de menthe chocolate custard and dipped in a creme de menthe glaze and topped with chunks of dark chocolate, and… drum roll please… the Espresso Martini made with espresso martini custard, white chocolate glaze, and drizzle with coffee beans.

That’s not all though. These guys are also slinging alcohol-infused canolli. Filled with the likes of apple-whiskey infused custard, creamy Bailey’s coffee custard, coffee and rum custard, espresso martini custard, Nutella cognac custard and pina colada custard, this is a seriously delicious twist to the usual delicate tubes of golden, fried pastry we’re used to.

Say no more right?

Just go easy on the portions – there’s no hangover quite like a sugar hangover.

Drunken Donuts is located at 326 Settlement Rd, Thomastown and open Friday and Saturdays from 6pm – 10pm and Sunday from 2pm – 8pm. A second location is set to open this Friday at 267 Ballarat Road, Braybrook, and will be open Friday to Sunday from 6pm – 4am.
