Luka Muller’s new show ‘Old / New / Other’ is a pick-your-own comedy adventure

Words by Arielle Richards

Muller hits the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for 12 shows in April.

Rising comic Luka Muller is arriving at the 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival with his new(ish) show, Old / New / Other. A 50-minute fresh take on comedy, Muller’s Old / New / Other will be something a little different – featuring some old things, some new things… you get the picture.

What you need to know

Keep up with the latest comedy news here.

The show is half written, half improvised, a structure well suited to a comedy circuit coming out the other side of a pandemic. “Any Melbourne comedian who’s saying they are ready to do a good full-length show after the year we had last year is, probably, a liar,” Muller explains.

Muller has the jokes – stories about cops, drugs and coming to terms with his asexuality. He has old jokes, new post-COVID jokes, and a bunch of other things – an energising mishmash of improv, stories, gossip, truth-telling and audience rapport, guaranteed to delight and entertain.

He’ll be putting much of it together on the spot, and the audience will choose the order, meaning there’ll be a fun, loose, new(ish) show every night.

“After all, we’re stronger together,” Muller says.

Since jumping onto the comedy circuit in 2016, Muller has headlined shows around Australia and abroad, in Edinburgh, London, Paris and Berlin. The writer-podcaster-comic has sold out shows at MICF, alongside the Perth and Adelaide Fringe festivals, while he’s also performed at Splendour in the Grass and been seen and heard on SBS TV, ABC Radio, triple j and Channel 31.

In preparation for MICF, we asked Muller to give his own personal introduction to the show. Check it out below.

You can catch Luka Muller’s Old / New / Other at the Imperial Hotel from April 5 to 11, and at Loop Bar from April 13 to 17. To grab tickets, head here.
