Melbourne’s La Mama Theatre is nearing the final stages of its Rebuild fundraising campaign. Theatre staff and board members unveiled the campaign plans a year after a fire destroyed the cultural icon in May 2018.

La Mama’s artistic director Liz Jones says the goal is within reach, “but we are not quite there”.

“Thank you so much if you have contributed, but if you haven’t quite yet then please think of us, dig deep and be part of our wonderful future.”

The rebuild will provide La Mama with a bunch of exciting new opportunities. These include the chance to make the theatre universally accessible, creating dedicated rehearsal and office spaces, improving front of house amenities and theatre facilities, and supporting the needs of future generations of artists.

“Whether you come as a playwright pitching a script, whether you come as a punter… just come and join us, and let’s see what La Mama makes in its next 50 years,” says La Mama chair Richard Watts.
