John Prine has died of coronavirus, aged 73

The musician was admitted to ICU with symptoms last month.

After being hospitalised due to severe coronavirus symptoms at the end of last month, American country and folk icon John Prine has died at the age of 73.

While no official statement has been released, news of Prine’s passing has been confirmed by his family. Prine’s wife, Fiona Whelan Prine provided regular updates on her husband’s condition during his time in ICU, expressing her gratitude to the medical staff and fans for their support.

Prine battled cancer twice during his lifetime and had part of his lung removed after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2013. He was due to visit Australia for this year’s now-cancelled Bluesfest, though he pulled out of the festival earlier this year following medical advice surrounding issues with a pre-existing hip injury.
