Joaquin Phoenix to play The Joker in new origin film, Scorsese to produce

Less than six months ago, Walter Hamada – film executive and producer – was hired as the new president of DC Films, following the commercial bust of Justice League. On June 12, it was made public that former DC Entertainment co-pres and chief creative officer, Geoff Johns, would leave his position, thus consolidating Hamada and his efforts to figure out which of DC’s upcoming films are worth the wait and which are worth the cut.

Some that seem to have survived the cuts include Todd Phillips’ Joker origin film starring Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Reeve’s The Batman which will not star Ben Affleck, and James Wan’s Aquaman starring Jason Momoa. Phillips’ film could launch a new imprint of DC Films – rumour has it names include ‘DC Dark’ or ‘DC Black’, to separate specific features from the main DC Universe interconnected stories.

Don’t worry about the apparent lack of any women involved in this process; DC have a few female-driven blockbusters up their sleeve. Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Christina Hodson’s Batgirl is still in the works despite losing Joss Whedon to writer’s block. 2019 will see Wonder Woman 1984 bring back Gal Gadot’s heroine, with Patty Jenkins once again at the helm – this time boasting a new villain, Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig.

So, DC is shaking it up big time and making some cuts. Walter Hamada certainly has his work cut out for him, with huge names such as James Wan, Ezra Miller, and Martin Scorcese thrown into the mix. Albeit, we’re still stuck with men directing films for the masses, and women directing films for fellow females. Niche markets, I believe they’re called?
