In Conversation On Identity, Intersectionality & Play

Internationally renowned artist Shantell Martin is coming to Sydney for Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in collaboration with Absolut Art.

We invite you to join us at 107 Project in Redfern for an intimate conversation between Shantell Martin and Sydney Biennale artistic director Brook Andrew on Identity, Intersectionality and Play.

Martin, who is based in New York, is best known for her signature black and white drawings that are often staged as live performances, transforming everything from blank walls and Times Square billboards, to cars and circuit boards. Her collaborators include Kendrick Lamar for Miami Art Basel, Lizzo for World Pride Day, Karlie Kloss and The New York City Ballet.

Martin says “It’s a wonderful honor to celebrate PRIDE in Sydney this year! Now more than ever, especially as a queer, woman of color, and artist, I feel a deep responsibility to use my craft and my voice to connect, celebrate and honor my community. It gives me hope that the conversation will continue and we will continue to rise, together.”

Brook Andrew is an Australian interdisciplinary artist who examines dominant narratives, often relating to colonialism and modernist histories.
