Hip hop this week: Anderson .Paak to release new album and Hilltop Hoods break ARIA record

While Solange has just dropped her latest effort.

ANDERSON .PAAK TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘VENTURA’ IN APRIL

It hasn’t been that long since Anderson .Paak’s Oxnard record was released for fans to get around over the summer, but for those who are simply wanting more from the artist, you’re not going to be waiting long.

Ventura, the next instalment in Anderson. Paak’s coastal themed body of work, is being released on April 12th. Recorded at the same time as Oxnard, under the eyes of Dr. Dre, Ventura is somewhat of a companion piece to Oxnard, the latter named after .Paak’s hometown. He says of his new album, “Growing up in Oxnard gave me the grit and the church to find this voice of mine. One town over I went further and found my depth. The duality of each place inspired me greatly and from that, I made two albums at the exact same time but held one back because that would have been too many songs to perform live for you all! I like ending things on an even number, so welcome to Ventura.”

HILLTOP HOODS SET NEW ARIA RECORD WITH THE GREAT EXPANSE

The Hilltop Hoods are still coming down off the highs of touring with Eminem on the recent RAPTURE 2019 stadium tour, but over the weekend, the trio were gifted with another little boost; their new album, The Great Expanse, debuted at #1 on the ARIA Album Chart.

The achievement makes the Hoods the holders of the most #1’s by an Australian band or group, with their tally currently sitting at six, with their first #1 album coming in The Hard Road back in 2006. Behind them on this list of #1 holders are Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham and The 12th Man.

Already, The Great Expanse has enjoyed single chart success too, with ‘Clark Griswold’ clocking #48 in July, the now-Platinum ‘Leave Me Lonely’ climbing to #11 and latest single ‘Exit Sign’, featuring Ecca Vandal and Illy, debuting at #44 last week.

SOLANGE DROPS NEW ALBUM WHEN I GET HOME

Three years on from the release of her acclaimed A Seat At The Table record, Solange Knowles dropped a new album on fans on Friday, in When I Get Home. Recruiting the likes of Sampha, Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz, The Internet’s Steve Lacy, Earl Sweatshirt, Pharrell Williams, Tyler, The Creator and Metro Boomin’, When I Get Home sits at 19 tracks deep.

Recorded between New Orleans, Houston and Jamaica, Solange’s fourth studio album has intrinsic ties to her hometown of Houston, with southern hip hop flavour threaded expertly throughout. Jazz and hip hop influences come together with funk and alt-R&B, in a way of continuing the sonic story of A Seat At The Table, but representing something brand new for Solange.
