Get out of the city and discover a world of new music, art and film with South Space 18

Tell us about SOUTH SPACE 18. SOUTH SPACE 18 is a new music, art and film festival that will take over Melbourne’s inner-South – Elsternwick, Ripponlea and Balaclava. Run by South of the City (SOC), the festival will explore the creative underbelly of the southside, showcasing some of Melbourne’s most exciting talents across 15 events.

What is the main message you want to get across? That creativity and culture exist throughout the southside. Plenty of young, creative people call the southside home, but spend hours on public transport and surging Ubers to get to venues in the north. The unsung venues that exist in the south are overlooked in favour of contributing to an established scene elsewhere.

What are some of the event highlights we should make sure we check out? On Saturday February 10, Pause Bar (Balaclava) is hosting a lineup of ten bands. Just around the corner from this mini-festival, there’ll be a Greville Records pop-up store and an art, craft and zine market featuring 15 young creative people.

What do you hope to achieve through the festival? Amplifying the creative culture that exists outside of the established venues in Melbourne.

Before we head to SOUTH SPACE 18, is there anything else we should know? Elsternwick, Ripponlea and Balaclava – where all the events are taking place –  are only 15 minutes away from Flinders Street. The Sandringham train line will take you to the doorstep of each and every one of the gigs, exhibitions, films screenings and other events we’ve got planned.
