Five gigs to catch in Melbourne this weekend

Words by Annie-Mei Forster

No weekend plans? No problem.

Justin & the Vanguard at Red Betty

Head to Brunswick tonight to catch Justin & the Vanguard perform at Red Betty. Frontman Justin Wayne describes himself as “an old soul with a new sound”. If you missed them the first time, don’t miss out on this gig. They’ll be supported by The Great Emu Casualties and Louis Cooke. Catch them Friday July 19 from 7.30pm. Entry is free. More info here.

Skelter at Bar 303

If you’re looking for something a bit heavier, head to Bar 303 this weekend to check out Skelter. They’ll be supported by a bunch of other local bands, such as Cirrus Crown, Flogs, Verona Lights and Seddon. The gig kicks off at 7.00 pm on Saturday July 20 and it’s totally free. More info here.

Ousmane Sonko and Kairo Family Band at The Bar Next Door

Expect some soulful traditional West African beats with Ousmane Sonko and Kairo Family Band tonight. Kairo means ‘peace’ in the Mandiko language. Picture percussive but melodic and uplifting sounds. Head to The Bar Next Door Friday July 19 for this free event from 9pm. More info here.

ReGenerationX at Swamplands Bar

Dust off your denim cut-offs because ReGenerationX will be bringing some ’80s and ’90s classics to Swamplands Bar. A fun blast from the past for Gen X-ers that’s not to be missed. The gig kicks off at 7.30 pm Saturday July 20 and you can save some bucks for a drink at the bar because there’s no cost. More info here.

I’m Talking at The Corner Hotel

This gig’s not to be missed as five of the original seven members of Aussie ’80s funk-pop rock band I’m Talking reunite for their 2019 tour. They’ll be joined by special guest Sex On Toast. Catch Kate Ceberano and the gang at The Corner Hotel this Saturday July 20. Tickets available via Eventbrite.
